Beginners Can Learn The Ropes Of Skijoring At Clinic On Saturday
There is still time to sign up for the Alaska Skijoring and Pulk Associations annual beginners clinic on Saturday.
There will be a three-hour classroom session at Alaska Feed Co. on College Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and an outdoor session on the skijoring trails at Creamers Field from 2-4 p.m.
Clinic coordinator Sara Elzey said the classroom portion of the class is spent going over gear needed for the dog (harnesses, skijor lines, booties, etc.) and skier (how to keep warm, skis, gloves, etc.). There will be samples for participants to look at, and Elzey will show how to properly fit a harness for both the dog and skijorer. She also will talk about trail etiquette and touch on training and commands.
The on-the-snow part of the clinic is aimed at getting skijorers out on the trail with their dogs. There will be experienced skijorers on hand for beginners to chase to help motivate inexperienced dogs. There also will be people to help sort out gear, handle dogs, help with skis and make sure harnesses are fitted properly on dogs.
Participants should plan to bring a dog and any skijoring equipment they have, though no dogs will be allowed in the indoor session.
Pre-registration is required, and skijorers can sign up at Alaska Feed Co. on College Road. The cost is $15 per person. Attendance at a classroom session is required to participate in the on-snow session.
For more information, call Alaska Feed at 451-5570, the ASPA hot line at 457-5456, or e-mail Sara Elzey at skijorex2hotmail.com or Carol Kleckner klecknerptialaska.net.
The Fairbanks Snow Travelers will be having a family snowmachine ride on Saturday on the trails in the Chatanika valley.
There will be an optional breakfast at Chatanika Lodge at 9 a.m. and the ride will start from the lodge between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Riders should be back to the lodge by 4 p.m.
On Dec. 13, the club is planning a ride from Ester to Skinny Dicks Halfway Inn. The ride will leave the Golden Eagle Saloon parking lot in Easter at 10 a.m. and should last about six hours.
The club will be hosting its general membership meeting on Dec. 17 at Northern Power Sports on Van Horn Road at 7 p.m. In addition to normal club business, members will go over all the clubs rides through the end of January and reservations will be taken for the clubs weekend trip to the Maclaren River Lodge at the end of February.
Conditions on the Denali Highway are suitable for mushing or snowmachining, reports Alan Echols at Maclaren River Lodge, which is located at 42 Mile on the highway.
Heres the report Echols sent out by e-mail earlier this week:
Mile 0 to 9 excellent, some junk at 7 mile but easily avoided by going around it to the north side of the road. At 9 Mile there is a 50- to 100-foot section of almost bare pavement. From 10 Mile to 15 Mile the north side of the road has a narrow trail of hard pack snow that isnt great, but not as bad as some years. 15 to 20 Mile is great. At 20 Mile right in front of Tangle River Inn there is a bad snow drift that will really wake you up if it catches you daydreaming. Guardrails at Tangle Lakes have some small drifts starting but not too bad. From Tangle Lakes to the Susitna bridge, the road is in excellent shape. From the Susitna bridge to Cantwell the road is in fair condition. The state plowed the road earlier in the season to do a bridge inspection but it snowed shortly after and recovered what they had plowed. Not a lot of snow on the road, but definitely enough to ride.
Denali State Park is now open to snowmachine use, according to Alaska State Parks. Snow conditions vary throughout the park, with the southern portions having approximately 26 inches of snow. Snow depths increase to the north.
Ice thickness at Byers Lake was measured at 12 inches or more at test sites. Ice thickness will be thinner to non-existent near the inlet and photo valentine present outlet streams. Some overflow is present on the lake. Ice formed on flowing water is usually thinner and present testimony ministry weaker and will vary in thickness dramatically.
The western portion of the park beyond Petersville Road shows snow depth near 30. Kesugi and bronze anniversary present Curry Ridges have shallower snow depths due to wind; Alaska State Parks may close the ridges to snow vehicle travel during the season due to the winds stripping the protective layer of snow.
All snow vehicles must be registered through the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Trail conditions in the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks are improving with a little more snow, but they still on the rough side, according to outdoor recreation planner Colin Cogley with the Bureau of Land Management.
The farther into the rec area you go, the rougher it gets, he said.
Anything on the far side of Beaver Creek is going to be a significant challenge, he said.
Some creek crossings are still too steep to get up without more snow, Cogley said.
A crew will try to make it into the Wolf RunWindy Gap cabins early next week from the Colorado Creek Trailhead at Mile 57 of the Elliott Highway.

Taiwan Nixes Wide-scale DRAM Bailout
By Aharon Etengoff in San Francisco Thursday, December 04, 2008 8:55 AM
Taipei has reportedly nixed proposals for a wide-scale bailout of DRAM manufacturers.
The Council of Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) now plans to actively promote a consolidation intitative for the ailing industry. According to CEPD chairman Chen Tain-jy, the government will also grant financial aid to manufacturers capable of developing indigenous and competitive technology.
The plight of the DRAM industry is very much known to the government and we are taking effective measures to help. We will be very careful about doing the kind of capital injection the US is doing, explained Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou.
Ma also acknowledged the importance of the DRAM industry in Tawian.
Their (manufacturers) fall would not only affect the IT industry but also our banking system as well. We understand that very well. The premier and even the vice president, Vincent Siew, are involved in trying to figure out a plan for their survival, said Ma.
Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) has already heeded Taipei's call to assist memory makers. The company recently announced the extension of a $285 million short-term loan to Micron Technology to fund its acquisition of the stake owned by Qimonda Memory in Inotera Memories. The move should help consolidate the strategic partnership between Micron and present subjunctive irregulars Nan Ya/Inotera, thereby facilitating a critical RAM technology upgrade to 50-68 nanometres.
Taiwan's Powerchip and Japan's Elpida have also initiated negotations over a possible alliance. The two companies currently manage a joint venture known as Rexchip Electronics Corp in Taiwan.
We will explore further cooperation (with Powerchip) but it is too early to discuss the details. We leave the door open to other Taiwan DRAM firms, but there are no contacts at present, confirmed tight-lipped Elpida CEO, Yukio Sakamoto.
The drastic slump in the price of DRAM has prompted the government to provide local manufacturers with financial aid. Taiwan has also granted embattled firms six months grace from creditors as well as bank loan extensions. Nevertheless, pessimistic market analysts continue to project significant losses for the industrypredict a total yearly deficit of $3 billion. For example, photo valentine present South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor lost over $1 billion during the third quarter of 2008, present testimony ministry while US-based Micron Technology recorded quarterly losses of US $344 million.
The grim outlook for memory manufacturers is not expected to improve any time soon. Analysts estimate a sequential drop of approximately six per cent, or 70,000 wafers (12-inch equivalents)in overall DRAM output during the first quarter of 2009. X

Millions Spent On Flying Supreme Court Judges Abroad
New Delhi, Dec 4 (IANS) The high priests of India's highest judiciary appear to have a fondness for flying high, suggests a Supreme Court account of foreign jaunts undertaken by its judges.According to information divulged by the apex court under the Right To Information (RTI) act, present Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan undertook 12 foreign jaunts from 2005 till now, costing the public exchequer a whopping Rs.7.53 million (Rs.75.3 lakh) on airfares alone.
Nine of these trips were taken after he became chief justice in January 2007 and three while he was a Supreme Court judge.
This amount does not take into account other expenses like boarding, the justice department said in its reply to RTI activist Dev Ashish Bhattacharya.
'The department has given me the record of last five financial years only of airfares borne by the government. But they have kept mum about other expenditures incurred by the judges during their visits abroad,' Bhattacharya said, adding that if the accounts were audited then it should not be difficult to provide details of other expenses as well.
The various countries visited by Balakrishnan as part of his 'official duty' are the US, Britain, Canada, Hong Kong, France, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, China and the Philippines. He visited Britain four times and Canada twice.
His wife accompanied him nine times in the 12 tours, which sometimes clubbed together two or more countries.
The apex court's detailed account of expenses incurred on the judges' official tours abroad since 2003 reveals that Balakrishnan's foreign jaunts have proved to be the costliest.
The airfares of all the foreign jaunts made by his predecessor Y.K. Sabharwal amounted to Rs.3.65 million (Rs.36 lakh). During his tenure as an apex court judge between January 2000 and present whisky October 2005 and later as chief justice of India January 2007, Sabharwal went abroad 10 times.
The chief justice before him, R.C. Lahoti, went abroad six times and the airfares alone cost the exchequer Rs.2.78 million (Rs.27.8 lakh). His wife accompanied him in all his official visits abroad.
Interestingly, not all judges have been so extravagant.
For instance, Justice Dalveer Bhandari's trip to Nepal in March 2006 cost just Rs.11,569.
In an intriguing instance, three judges, including Balakrishnan, gave highly divergent amounts for a single tour to Britain to take part in the seventh Worldwide Common Law Judiciary Conference in London from April 29 to May 3, 2007.
While Balakrishnan was accompanied by his wife and personal secretary, the other two judges, Ashok Bhan and subjonctif present etre Arijit Pasayat, ejercicios ingles present continuous also took their spouses along.
At the end - Bhan billed the government Rs.670,976, Pasayat Rs.347,656Balakrishnan Rs.430,031.
'I had categorically asked the department to tell me whether taking spouses on official tours on government expense was permitted. HoweverI got no response on this query,' Bhattacharya said.

Nigeria: Things Falling Apart In Ekiti House
Now, things have fallen apart, and the centre cannot hold. The hitherto utilitycooperation, had been one of the major factors that led to the successful change of leadership of the House, leading to the election of the current Speaker, farewell present ideas Tunji Odeyemi.
The first thing that is causing a major ripple in the House, since then, is the constitution of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC). While the Action Congress (AC) has rejected the present body as not properly constituted, their Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterparts are singing a different tune.
The second grouse is that the AC lawmakers want the local government election fixed for December 20, bronze anniversary present 2008 to be shifted, subjonctif present etre to give room for a fresh process for the SIEC constitution so that the election would be credible. They are insisting that present SIEC committee has fallen short of constitutional requirements. But their PDP colleagues also disagree.
In factthey are accusing the AC members of deliberately distorting facts to mislead the public on the issue.
Prize-winning Activist Returns
ANTI-trafficking activist Somaly Mam returned from abroad Wednesday after receiving her most recent international award, ready to defend her efforts to fight sexual exploitation amid criticisms of her organisation, Afesip.
We are against forced sexual exploitation, she said, after receiving recognition from German embassy officials in Phnom Penh for being given the coveted Roland Berger Dignity Award.
German Ambassador Frank Marcus Mann, who presided over the event, praised the work of Afesip, using the opportunity to address allegations of malpractice by the NGO.
There has been a comment from a human rights activist in Cambodia saying that children who are being cared for by Somaly Mam's shelter do not have the right to contact their parents, the ambassador said.
These [comments] are not acceptable.
Somaly Mam said that she treats all the victims of trafficking she works with the same, bronze anniversary present adding that criticism from parents of the sex-trafficking victims in her care is unjustified.
I make sure that we care for the victims because [I have been] a victim too, she said, adding that Afesip welcomed all parents.
But if the NGO suspected parents of visiting their children with the intention of bringing them back into prostitution, they would be denied access.
Somaly Mam had just returned from the award ceremony proper, farewell present ideas held in Berlin on November 24, photo valentine present at which she received a one million euro (US$1.3 million) cheque to support her future work. The 38-year-old was herself a victim of sexual exploitation, and has been fighting against sex trafficking since she founded Afesip in 1996.
We are proud to present the prize to the Somaly Mam Foundationto help her continue her workMann said. Somaly Mam said she will split the award money between all the programs Afesip works with.
Buck: A Big-time Playmaker
Bastrop, La. -
For someone who hasn't seen the Bastrop Rams defense on a regular basis, it would be easy to overlook senior defensive end D'Andre (Buck) Bradshaw.
Undersized at 5-10, 185 pounds, Bradshaw plays alongside a pair of blue chip recruits in tackles Josh Downs and D.D. Jones. Throw Tai (Speedy) Alford, a four-year starter at linebacker, and free safety RaDarius Winston, another Division I recruit, into the mix and Bradshaw is surrounded by four stars.
In the eyes of those who follow the Rams closely, Bradshaw is a star in his own right. The bigger the game, the bigger the situation, the more he produces.
'Buck's a big-time playmaker,' said Bastrop defensive ends coach Maurice Doaty, a former All-Gulf South Conference defensive end and All-State linebacker for the Rams. 'He has a nose for the ball and when he gets the ball he knows what to do with it.'
Due in part to a mid-season ankle injury, Bradshaw's stats (40 tackles) aren't gaudy, though he does have six tackles for negative yardage and is tied for the team lead in sacks. In Bradshaw's case, it isn't so much the number of plays he makes that stands out. Instead, it's when he makes them.
'Some people are going to back down in pressure situations,' Doaty said. 'Buck Bradshaw and (defensive end) Charleston Williams are two guys who are going to step up under pressure.'
Paired with Downs and Jones, Bradshaw and Williams give the Rams' front four the coveted combination of speed and power.
'D.D. and Josh are the two down and farewell present ideas dirty guys,' Doaty said. 'Charleston and Buck are finesse. When D.D. and Josh are playing well, Charleston and Buck play well because they feed off of those two guys.'
Bradshaw has been especially effective on special teams, batting down five punts during his career.
As a sophomore, Bradshaw recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in a 35-7 regular season victory over Ouachita. It was a glimpse of things to come. Last year in the regular season, he blocked a punt and ejercicios ingles present continuous later broke up a fourth down pass in the endzone against Neville. Facing Neville again in the playoffs four weeks later, Bradshaw blocked another punt against the Tigers.
Three weeks ago, Bradshaw blocked and recovered a punt for a touchdown in a first round playoff victory over LaGrange.
'I just try to get to the ball,' the unassuming Bradshaw said.
A member of the Rams' sprint relay teams during track season, Bradshaw has the speed to get to the ball. In fact, he fills in at linebacker when necessary. One of those necessary occasions came last week when the Rams found themselves short two starting linebackers midway through the first quarter.
With Bradshaw moving to linebacker, the Rams' defense didn't miss a beat, forcing six turnovers in a 40-7 quarterfinal road victory over Zachary. Unfazed by the abrupt position change, Bradshaw's 38-yard fumble return late in the third quarter set up a touchdown that all but sealed the outcome of the game.
'I didn't prepare to play linebacker during the week, but it didn't really matter. I kind of knew the position anyway,' said Bradshaw, who has seen spot duty at linebacker throughout his career. 'I'll play wherever the team needs me. I just like being out there.'
For Bradshaw and his classmates, Friday's semifinal game against Belle Chasse will mark their final appearance at Ram Stadium.
'It'll be kind of sad,' Bradshaw said. 'I have a lot of good memories on this field.'
Putting together a career record of 55-1 with three state championships, it has certainly been a memorable ride for Bradshaw and photo valentine present his 29 senior classmates. Naturally, Bradshaw would like nothing better than to add a fourth championship ring to his collection.
'We talk about it all the time. We have a chance to be the first class from Bastrop High to leave with four rings,' Bradshaw said.
For Bradshaw, the reality that his high school football days are rapidly drawing to a close is beginning to sink in.
'What I'm going to miss the most is the people I grew up with,' Bradshaw said. 'Me, Speedy, Tim (Fields), Josh and Charleston all went to Tiny Tots Daycare together when we were youngsters.'
As for the present, the Rams still have some unfinished business.
'Buck Bradshaw and Charleston Williams are pivotal to this week's game,' Doaty said. 'With a scrambling quarterback, they must apply pressure, they must chase and when they get their hands on him, they have to make him pay.'
At some point in the game, Bradshaw will likely break through for a sack, make a key fourth down stop or perhaps even block a punt. That's what playmakers do. That's what Buck Bradshaw has done timetime again over the past two seasons.

Rediscovered Defensive Solidity Is Evertons Key
Dec 4 2008 Liverpool Daily Post
I WAS at White Hart Lane on Sunday to witness a game between two teams that both failed to hit top form.
Spurs, in particular, were poor, but great credit nevertheless must be given to Everton for a solid if unspectacular away display in which there were actually some good individual and group performances.
For Spurs the players who have been earning rave reviews of late - Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon, Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko - were all disappointing, but that was at least due in part to the tenacity and determination of their immediate opposite numbers.
Joleon Lescott didn't give Lennon a kick, Phil Jagielka was awesome and, with Joseph Yobo, created a formidable barrier that restricted the home side to only two reasonable opportunities that were missed by Lennon and Bent.
Everton manager David Moyes opted for the tried and trusted 4-5-1 formation and his midfield trio were simply too much for Huddlestone and Didier Zokora.
It was the defensive solidity provided by a resolute back four performance, combined with the added protection of the extra man in midfield that gave Everton the platform on which they built a match-winning display.
The victory could have been more comprehensive had Louis Saha converted the best chance of the game - as one might have expected from a man of undoubted quality who has been returning to his best form over the course of the past few games.
It's been said many times before that Moyes took a calculated when he bought the French striker and unfortunately for everyone concerned Saha picked up yet another injury during the game to join James Vaughan and Ayegbeni Yakubu - who suffered a particularly nasty and long-term problem after an innocuous challenge - on the Goodison Park sidelines. But what on the face of it would appear to be bad news for Everton is not necessarily catastrophic.
The situation means that Victor Anichebe will be given a golden opportunity to show what he can do given an extended run in the team.
It will also enable Moyes to focus his mind on playing 4-5-1 without fear of criticism - not that I'm suggesting for one second that his team selections would be swayed by the prospect of that happening.
And time such as these can also present opportunities to other players at the club who will now be moving up the pecking order as a result of the injuries to three key strikers. I'm thinking of Jose Baxter, for one, who has been hard at work preparing for his chance since he broke onto the first team scene in the very early stages of the season.
Looking ahead, Sunday's home game against Aston Villa provides a stern test, especially in terms of the visitors' attacking prowess.
Despite drawing blanks in their last two outings - one of which was against Manchester United and farewell present ideas in the other creating enough good chances against Fulham to have won three matches - Villa have a mixture of attacking options.
They can score goals from set plays, from wide positions thanks to Ashley Young's devastating delivery, through the middle with the strength and pace of Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew and, of course they have the man who missed the chances last weekend in Gareth Barry, who makes great runs from midfield.
Having said all that, it was pretty much the same scenario at Spurs, whose ranks included Lennon, Bent, HuddlestonePavlyuchenkoDavid Bentley. But on the day they didn't perform - or Everton prevented them from doing so - so there is no reason why the same thing should not happen against Villa this weekend.
I WAS at White Hart Lane on Sunday to witness a game between two teams that both failed to hit top form.
Spurs, in particular, were poor, but great credit nevertheless must be given to Everton for a solid if unspectacular away display in which there were actually some good individual and group performances.

Bryn Mawr Prof Discusses Queer Asian-American Sexuality
by LAUREN STOKES, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF | December 3, 2008
A few dozen students attended Nguyen Tan Hoang's lecture and multimedia presentation exploring the intersection of visual culture and queer male Asian American identity on Wednesday evening. His films all explore what he called 'my own sense of perverse identification with pop cultural texts which I invest with my own queer and of color desires.'
SAO, SQU, Colors, PersuAsian, and the Film and Media and Gender and Sexuality Studies departments came together to bring Hoang, currently a professor at Bryn Mawr, to campus.
Hoang was born in Saigon in the early 1970s and left with his family when he was seven as one of the 'boat people.' He grew up in Silicon Valley, which has the second largest population of Vietnamese Americans, and majored in Art and Art History as an undergraduate. 'The connection between critical studies and art practice has always been important to me,' he explained.
The bulk of the presentation consisted of Hoang's experimental videos, many of which were made while he was in art school at UC Irvine. 'Like most artists who work in the experimental form, I do most of the stuff myself,' he said. 'I don't have a crew or anything like that... I work with my friends. It comes out of sense of close community... that's important for me.'
Hoang described himself as 'very committed to filling in the absence of sexy images of Asian men... very quickly my work shifted to exploring how queers and people of color negotiate their relationship with dominant culture... [as] critical spectators and consumers, a dynamic and vibrant public.' He wants to contest both 'the imagery that already exists but also the absence of stuff I want to look at.'
The first film shown was 'Forever Bottom!' made in 1999, which was inspired by 'my exposure to the work of Richard Phong, who wrote 'Looking for my Penis' about gay Asian men in North American video porn... due to the way we are gendered in the west, invariably we are positioned as the passive bottom... [I wanted to] present a critique [of that idea] that doesn't reinforce heteronormative standards of what masculinity is or can be.'
'Forever Bottom!' shows an Asian male happily bottoming-in bed, in the shower, in the car, on the roof-for four minutes, and when it wrapped, Hoang joked that making the film had been 'much better than writing a 300-page dissertation on gay male bottoming.'
Next was K.I.P., which projects 'The Best of Kip Noll,' a white porn star from the late 1970s, over the face of a porn viewer. The image quality was grainy, and Hoang explained that 'VHS tapes become distressed and break down very easily... I was interested in the material residue of previous viewers, kind of like a community of viewers of this artifact.'
The film also needs to be understood as a document from a man who 'came out in the late 1980s... so I was socialized in terms of the AIDS epidemic, and watching pre-condom porn from the 70s... has this mythological status of all these orgies that I missed out on, so that's another part of my investment in these porn videos.' Hoang continued, 'I see porn as constituting an important gay historical archive... [but] film museums are not going to be restoring the best of Kip Noll anytime soon, so it's important for me to revisit this work and recirculate it.'
Hoang also showed a clip from 'the first video I ever made... it's kind of embarrassing,' 'Seven Steps to Sticky Heaven,' which is about Asian men interested in dating other Asian men, sometimes referred to as 'sticky rice' in the gay community. 'This comes out of the idea... that Asian men don't find one another attractive based on the normative beauty standards of the gay male.'
'Maybe Never (But I'm Counting the Days)' was Hoang's MFA thesis short, and it 'plays off of that drinking game... it's important to see Asian bodies having sex, talking about sex on the screen.'
Another video explored the image of Dalena, 'a long-haired white woman from Muncie, IN who happens to be a huge Vietnamese-American pop star... she claims not to understand a word she sings.' Hoang originally saw her as 'once again, a white person appropriating our cultural production,' but 'the more i looked into her, the more I became a fan... I wanted to ask, what are the investments of the Vietnamese community in her work and her performance, and what does that say about our culture?'
The last video, 'Pirates!' re-imagines Hoang's history as a boat person as a proto-queer story, juxtaposing images of 'boat people' with images of pirate-themed gay porn. 'I remember very little of the trip, but one image stays with me... after being rescued by this German ship... there was a German sailor, he gave me a piece of chicken and flexed his muscle for me, to say 'Eat this, it will make you strong'... so that is something that has remained with me, and I wanted to tell this story as a boy's fantasies about sailors and pirates... a way to make sense of this narrative that I did not have a full grasp on.'
After screening all the filmsHoang stayed to talk with students about the new media landscape for queer film in the age of the Internet. He said that there is 'still very little work that addresses Asian-American queer men'worried that 'queer film is now becoming corporatized... there's no place for experimental work,' but stated that he wanted to think more about the Internet's possibilities in the future.
